The State of Illinois Family Bereavement Act, effective January 1, 2023, includes leave provisions allowing eligible employees to take up to 10 days of unpaid leave following a qualifying event involving a covered family member. This Act provides unpaid leave time for additional circumstances related to bereavement and is available to any employee who has been employed by the University for at least 12 months and worked at least 1,000 hours in the last 12 months. The University provides paid funeral leave which allows employees to be paid for up to 5 of the 10 days of this family bereavement leave.
We are in the process of updating related University of Illinois System policies to reflect these changes and you will receive additional communication when they are available. Additionally, system changes for tracking the leave and creating new earn codes are anticipated to be ready mid-February.
The current paid University funeral leave remains the same. Employees may request this leave from the department and track the paid leave as per the established leave reporting process for that unit.
If an employee has a need for unpaid Family Bereavement Leave at this time, they may submit a request in writing to the unit/college HR representative. Once eligibility for the leave is determined, the leave may be approved. Until the system changes are in place, please track the leave as follows:
Non-Exempt Civil Service Employees:
Timesheet Entry: Excused Absence without Pay
Exempt Employees:
Complete a PARIS Current Pay Adjustment (CPA): Excused Absence without Pay to reduce earnings for unpaid leave taken.
Or
Complete ANA overpayment if deadline as passed for CPA
