Appointments Requiring Direct Board of Trustees Approval
As provided in University Statutes, certain Academic Professional appointments require formal approval by the Board of Trustees (BOT), on recommendation by the President. Other appointments do not require formal Board approval but are then reported to the BOT in the “Secretary’s Report.” The full list of appointments that require prior approval can be found on the Guidelines Regarding Approval of Appointments.
Several positions require advance review by the President and in some cases, by the Board of Trustees (BOT). The Approval for New Senior Level Appointments document contains information about the review process for new senior-level leadership appointments across the U of I System.
The appointments can be added immediately with the addition of an Acting, Interim, or Visiting modifier preceding the appointment title in lieu of the formal BOT approval. For consideration for prior approval by the BOT, a Board packet must be submitted to the HR Service Center. The Board packet should consist of the following items:
- Chancellor’s Briefing Document spreadsheet , which must include:
- Justification for the hire/permanent appointment
- Salary Comparison
- Position Authorization
- Meets Minimum Qualifications or Search Waiver approval
- Approved Job Description approved within the last 3 years
- Curriculum Vitae/Resume
- Draft Offer Letter signed by the Dean/Department Head. After BOT approval, official letter with permanent title will need to be submitted as well.
Please refer to UICHR Policy 202-02: Academic Hires – Appointments Requiring Direct Board Approval for specific BOT Approval Guidelines. If a Board packet is submitted on the due date noted above and is incomplete, we cannot guarantee that the appointment will be submitted in time for that month’s Board Meeting. Dates are subject to change based on Board and/or policy revisions. Please contact the UIC HR Service Center (UICHRServiceCenter@uillinois.edu) if you have questions.
