Employee Performance Program
image
The Employee Performance Program (EPP) supports your success at UIC by creating a continuous cycle of goal setting, professional development, feedback, and evaluation. This process helps you and your supervisor work together to define expectations, recognize progress, and identify opportunities for growth.
Whether you are new to UIC or a long-standing employee, the EPP ensures that performance conversations are consistent, constructive, and connected to UIC’s mission, values, and Core Competencies.
The EPP Cycle
The EPP follows a year-round process with three key phases:
- Goals & Expectations – Set clear, measurable performance and development goals.
- Feedback & Guidance – Maintain ongoing two-way communication to support progress.
- Annual Review – Reflect on achievements, address challenges, and plan for the next cycle.

Goals and Expectations
Establishing a clear understanding of your job responsibilities and what is expected of you in your role is essential to guide your success. Having a conversation about Goals and Expectations when you start a new job, when you take on new responsibilities, and on an annual basis will help you perform at your best and make informed decisions about your professional development objectives.
When to set goals:
- At the start of your employment
- At the beginning of each performance year
- Whenever responsibilities change significantly
Key steps:
- Review your job description and unit priorities
- Discuss expectations with your supervisor
- Align your goals with UIC Core Competencies and, if applicable, Management Competencies
Feedback and Guidance
Performance conversations shouldn’t happen just once a year. Regular feedback helps ensure you’re on track and gives you the opportunity to adjust course when needed.
Best practices:
- Schedule quarterly check-ins with your supervisor
- Ask for examples and clarification when receiving feedback
- Share your own reflections and challenges
- Use these discussions to update your goals or development plan
Annual Review
The Annual Review provides an opportunity to reflect on accomplishments, address challenges, and plan for the year ahead.
What to expect:
- Complete your self-review prior to the meeting
- Discuss your results, development progress, and goals for the next year
- Document the review and store it according to HR policy
